Overview

A nationally active real estate investment and development group is seeking a Senior Counsel to join its Legal & Compliance function.

This position will serve as the principal legal partner to internal teams overseeing large-scale mixed-use, hospitality, and commercial development projects across multiple U.S. markets.

The role offers the opportunity to guide projects through all phases of development – from acquisition and entitlement through design, construction, and delivery. The ideal candidate is a seasoned, business-minded attorney who enjoys working closely with operations and development executives in a fast-paced, collaborative setting.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide practical legal counsel on real estate development, construction, design, and project delivery matters.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a high volume of contracts, including AIA-based design and construction agreements, consulting and vendor contracts, and other project documentation.
  • Oversee legal aspects of development initiatives including site acquisition, land-use, entitlements, and environmental compliance.
  • Advise project teams on contract strategy, risk allocation, insurance requirements, and claims prevention.
  • Assist with purchase and sale agreements, leases, easements, covenants, and other transactional documents supporting ongoing development activity.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and outside counsel to streamline contracting processes, update templates, and enhance compliance protocols.
  • Support the General Counsel and senior leadership on strategic initiatives and special projects.

Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one U.S. state bar (Colorado preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in real estate, construction, or development law, with in-house or major law firm experience.
  • Advanced understanding of construction and design contracting.
  • Proven ability to negotiate complex agreements and balance legal precision with commercial practicality.
